Janaan Hashim is a native of Washington, DC and moved to Chicago in 1992. She earned her Juris Doctor degree cum laude from DePaul University College of Law, where she earned an academic scholarship her second year and was on a winning National Appellate Moot Court team.
Before partnering at Amal Law Group, Janaan worked at the State Appellate Defender’s Office where she was an assistant defender, filing criminal defense appeals ranging in crimes from simple theft to first degree murder.
Janaan has shifted her focus toward her passion in civil rights law, while also taking on criminal defense cases.

Community Service:
Janaan maintains an active schedule outside the office. In addition to her public speaking engagements, Janaan is an adjunct professor at McCormick Theological Seminary, where she team-teaches a course titled Religious Pluralism and the Ministry. She is also a trustee of the Parliament of the World’s Religions and sits on the Board of Directors of both Sound Vision Foundation, International Union of Muslim Women, and the steering committee of the Religion Communication Congress 2010. You can hear Janaan on the radio every Tuesday evening where she hosts WCEV’s Radio Islam program, a daily call-in talk show airing 6-7pm CT.
Janaan served as spokesperson for the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago from 2004 - 2009, and was appointed co-chair of its Media Relations Committee. She was as a founding board member and executive committee member of the grassroots civil rights organization CAIR-Chicago.
